In this document you will find a list of prerequisite courses for all of the veterinary schools except for those that received accreditation after February 2011, such as Ross University or St. George University. Every school requires a different set of courses! Keep this in mind when registering for courses at WWU. For a broad list of courses that covers many of the veterinary school prereqs, refer to Western's Pre-Veterinary Advising Sheet here.
If you have questions about course requirements for specific schools, go to their websites and find the contact email provided. Communicating with vet schools can often lead to discovery of leniencies and changes in prerequisites. Personal Statement
VMCAS – 5000 characters (including spaces) Just over a page, single spaced Be memorable, but not obnoxious Be confident, but be able to back it up Make it obvious why they would be missing out on by rejecting you Leave it open ended for the interview-- you want them to have questions for you! |
Personal Statement Quotes
“Admittedly,I still have a lot to learn academically, but the fact remains that I have an indispensible skill set and a proficiency that most applicants are unlikely to match.” “To say the least, my experience in the veterinary field has made me a very strong candidate for admission to the program. Such experience cannot be ignored in evaluating my suitability for the program.” |
Interview
The interview is conducted by a three member interview board, typically composed of two faculty members and one community vet. When writing your personal statement, make sure you are prepared to be questioned by the interview board about the area you feel makes you the strongest candidate. The interview will be tailored to your personal experience. Expect questions about topics such as euthanasia, financing your education, starting salary, and managing a heavy academic load. Be prepared for ethical questions, and know that they are not trying to trick you! Some examples of ethical questions are: Is commission unethical? What is your opinion abou the horse slaughter act? How would you deal with different clients in different cases of euthanasia?
To prepare yourself with current ethical issues and events, refer to JAVMA (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association) and AJVR (American Journal of Veterinary Research). Make sure to also prepare for more personal questions about yourself and be able to relate broad interests, activities and personality traits to the veterinary field. You will likely be asked about your personal background, responsibilities that you have had to undertake, and your motivation to attend veterinary school. This preparation will help you to be logical, calm, confident, and knowledgable during your interview!
Cost of Attendance
In-state tuition, fees, books (1 year): ~$24,000
Out-of state tuition, fees, books (1 year): ~$55,000
This does not include living expenses, but take into account that Pullman living expenses will typically be cheaper than living expenses in other veterinary school locations.
