The Alternative Humane Society is an all-volunteer, no-kill, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Whatcom County. They have no shelter, office, or paid staff. Their programs include Canine Foster & Adoption, Spay & Neuter Assistance, and Community Cats Information and Referral. Volunteers can have a range of duties, from handling dogs during adoptathons to providing assitance with fundraising and secretarial duties. Northwest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

To volunteer at the Northwest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, fill out a volunteer application and call (360) 966-8845, or email [email protected]. The Rehab Center is a temporary home for orphaned or injured wildlife such as birds, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, deer, and much more. Their busiest months are April through September, during Baby Season. During these months, we will establish a carpool system for Western's Pre-Vet students back and forth from the Center.
Note that the Center also offers internships from April to October, lasting 8 to 12 weeks. Applications are currently being accepted! To learn more about these internships, click here.

This position typically has a long waitlist--be prepared to take on a different position while you wait for an opening in the clinic. Note that the Whatcom Humane Societies tend to allow volunteers to become involved in the veterinary clinic after a minimum of six months of volunteering in a different position, such as a TLC volunteer. If you decide to volunteer in one of these positions while waiting for an opening in the vet clinic, make sure you consistently stay in contact with Emily Wyss regarding openings in the vet clinic and your status on the waitlist.

World Vets is a non-government organization (NGO) providing veterinary aid around the globe in collaboration with animal advocacy groups, foreign governments, US & foreign military groups and veterinary professionals abroad. They work in 34 countries and 6 continents. They address human health issues impacted by zoonotic diseases in developing countries in addition to veterinary issues. Although most of their trips include spots for pre-vet students, World Vets has created a new program dedicated to students. Check out the details of this trip here.
